The BNP yesterday dismissed the news of Khaleda Zia’s release on parole as baseless. “Our Deshnetri has not been paroled. Most of the news report on the matter is baseless,” said party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. He was speaking as the chief guest at an extended meeting of a faction of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at the Jatiya Press Club.
His comments came after an English language daily carried a report claiming that the government and the BNP reportedly reached an understanding over the release of the former premier on parole for her treatment in the UK. Mirza Alamgir has mentioned that BNP leaders usually go to meet the party’s chairperson on the occasion of special days like the first
day of Boishakh and December 16. “There is nothing new to discover here…The matter of seeking parole by our leader is being discussed for the past few days. Today (Tuesday) an English language daily carried a story on the matter with datelines. When they contacted me for my reaction I told them the news is baseless,” he said.
He has also alleged a section of journalists was speaking on behalf of a special quarter. Besides, most of the journalists lose their jobs when they speak against colonialism and expansionism. Newspapers were being shut one one after another and some journalists have become victims of enforced disappearance and are facing arrest, he added.
He also said people had no democratic rights. They were deprived of justice while law enforcers treated them badly. The BNP leader urged people to get united as there was no alternative but to move ahead with courage and fearlessness. “We all got united in 1971 for independence, now we all have to get united again to protect the independence of the country,” he added.
He called upon journalists to refrain from practising yellow journalism, adding that a section was trying to control the media and they were in cahoots with the ruling regime to build a ‘whimsical society’.
Mirza Alamgir alleged that the administration had no accountability, law and order had deteriorated and an anarchic situation prevailed in the country.
He said the incidents of rape took place at Sonagazi and Subornachar while the law enforcers oppressed people who raised their voice against the incidents.
The meeting was presided over by Quader Ghani Chowdhury, president of the DUJ. Among those who spoke on the occasion were former president of Jatiya Press Club Shawkat Mahmud, former general secretary Syed Abdal Ahmed, president of a portion of BFUJ Ruhul Amin Gazi, Abdus Shahid, Abdul Hye Sikder and DUJ secretary Shahidul Islam.
