Jibon and Sunday steered holders Abahani Limited to important win in the Bangladesh Premier League football defeating Chittagong Abahani Limited by 2-0 yesterday at the Bangabandhu Nationa Stadium.

In the rain interrupted match, Abahani grabbed the deserving win after playing with full authority against their Chattogram counterpart throughout 90 minutes time.

Abahani, the reigning champions who have one match left to finish the first round, obtained 27 points from 11 matches to close the gap with the table toppers Bashundhara Kings leading with 28 points from 10 matches.

Abahani saw two setbacks in their last 11 matches with going down to Bashundhara Kings by 0-3 in the very second match and suffering 2-0 defeat to Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra in their eighth match.

Abahani will play their last match of the first leg against Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, the former champions who are yet to get back their real strength when they are almost out of the title race obtaining only 13 points from 10 matches.

However, Abahani, who are in exciting mood after winning their first match in the ongoing AFC Cup group phase match against Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) of Nepal at their (MMC) ground, were on offensive attitude right from the kick off with going closer to make the break through in the very third minute.

But Chittagong Abahani custodian Nehal successfully saved two back to back efforts from Nabib Newaz Jibon and Masih Shaighani.

Jibon was about to get his sixth goal in the league with a powerful right footer from inside the box but CTG Abahani goal keeper Nehal made a beautiful save punching the ball for a corner and the header of Afghan defender Masih Shaighani on the corner was also denied by Nehal.

Chittagong Abahani could have changed the scenario just three minutes later after getting rid of big threats when from a counter attack they had a very easy chance to take lead. But Momodou Bah looked very shaky taking his shot straight to Shahidul Sohel Abahani’s helpless keeper when he was one on one situation inside the area.

Abahani just escaping from conceding a goal, again put pressure on the opponents and took lead on 10th minute through Nabib Newaz Jibon, the least they deserved for their dominance.

Jibon entered into the box down the left and met with a Korean midfielder cross from right before to push the ball into net but Belfort had the all credits when the Haitian forward made it easy for them (1-0).

Abahani kept the pressure and doubled the lead on 17th minute and this time Sunday Chizoba nodded his powerful header into far corner of the net when Jibon floated his right side cross (2-0).

Referee was forced to stop the match for six minutes before to go for break due to heavy rain but in the second half none of the team could play their usual game on the rain socked ground, as Abahani could not increase the margin and CTG Abahani also failed to score any goal.

Arambagh 2 v Team BJMC 0 In the other match of the day, Arambagh Krira Sangha had a hard fought 2-1 victory over Team BJMC at the Rafique Uddin Stadium Mymensingh.

Paul Emily and Rabiul Hassan scored one goal each for Arambagh at early hour on fourth and eighth minute respectively.

Samson Illiasu reduced one goal for BJMC on 83rd Minute.
