The Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists of Chittagong University (CU) unit withdrew their blockade yesterday after a meeting with the university authorities. Professor Ali Asgor, the university proctor said, “The students sat with us from 4pm to 6:30pm. In the meeting, they discussed all their demands in presence of the vice-chancellor and they also withdrew the blockade at the meeting.”
A tense situation prevailed on the campus and no classes or examinations were held yesterday following Sunday’s clashes between BCL activists and police that injured at least 10 people.
Shuttle train for students and the teachers’ bus services were kept off on security purpose, said CU authorities. Officials also said that alleged BCL activists poured sand in the engine of the teachers’ buses, causing serious damage.
“We will run shuttle train after the situation eases and the threat wanes,” said Md Kamal, divisional traffic control officer of Chattogram Railway.
On Sunday, sporadic clashes broke out between BCL activists and police on the university campus during a blockade enforced by a faction of BCL to press home their 4-point demands, including release of some of their leaders and withdrawal of a case filed against them lodged by CU authorities.
However, due to the blockade, the shuttle trains from Chattogram could not go to the university while all the examinations and classes on Sunday were suspended.
Mirza Khabir Sadaf, leader of one of the factions said, “We have withdrawn our blockade after getting assurance from the VC sir to meet our demands including withdrawal of the cases and release of six of our activists.” Two shuttle-train based BCL groups - CFC and Bijoy engaged
in clashes on the campus over a social media post. Later, the university authorities filed a case over the matter. Six of the BCL activists were sent to jail following the case. Consequently, both the groups started the blockade demanding their release on Sunday.
The BCL men in a Facebook post had declared on Saturday that they would go for an indefinite strike to press home their four-point demand, including resignation of Proctor Ali Asgar Chowdhury and withdrawal of Officer-in-Charge of Hathazari Police Station Belal Md Jahangir for filing a “false” arms case against six BCL activists of the CU unit.
