Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) yesterday demanded a decision on environmental concerns ahead of the Conference of Parties COP-21 to be held in Paris on November 30. The demand was put forward at a press conference at TIB in Dhanmondi in the capital yesterday.
Chief Executive Director of TIB Dr Iftekharuzzaman demanded that the government make a rational assessment of environmental impact if the coal-fired power plant project is implemented at Rampal in Bagerghat ahead of COP-21.
“Reviewing the feasibility and impact of the project, specific announcements should be made because at COP 21 conference, surely some questions will arise regarding the Rampal project and we don’t want our government facing an embarrassing situation,” he said.
“Climate change is very important for us. Those who are responsible for climate change have made a commitment internationally that affected countries will be compensated. However, developed countries are not keeping their commitments with some quarters treating compensations offered as loans. As a result, countries like ours are being affected from both sides,” he added.
Among the demands raised by TIB yesterday are: implementation of a legally binding agreement to limit increase in global temperatures to a maximum 22 degree Celsius in industrialised and emerging economies as compared to the pre-industrial period, fighting harmful effects of global climate change, formulation of long-term roadmaps for demand-based financing to affected countries by industrialised countries from 2016 to 2030, continuity of development funding to ensure sustainable development and poverty reduction, and specific commitment to provide promised climate funds.
