The police submitted the charge sheet more than a year ago, and the court not only accepted it, but also framed charges against an influential doctor. But for some mysterious reason, the health ministry has not taken steps against the physician.
The doctor was accused of trying to rape a colleague while working in a room at the National Kidney Institute in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagor police station area on May 22 last year, investigation reveals.
According to documents obtained from the health ministry, an assistant professor of Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s nephrology department filed a case against Dr Md Masud Iqbal, associate professor of nephrology at Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital in the city.
The police submitted the charge sheet on August 6 last year, and the court framed the charge of attempt to rape.
Biman Kumar Shaha, additional secretary (discipline and nursing) and Asma Taskin, deputy secretary (discipline) of the health and family planning ministry, in memo No. 45.150.027.01.00.124.2014, gave their opinion for suspension of Dr Iqbal as per note 1 and note 2 of part 1 of rule 73 of the Bangladesh Service Rules (BSR).
But till today, no step has been taken against Dr Iqbal.
While talking to The Independent yesterday (Wednesday) evening, health minister Mohammad Nasim said: "I am looking into the matter and will take legal action soon."
According to the case statement, around 1:00pm on May 22 last year, the accused entered room No. 225 of the National Kidney Institute and tried to rape the assistant professor. When she cried for help, the accused left the scene. Later, a case was filed.
During the incident, both the accused and the victim were working at the National Kidney Institute.
During investigation, the police found evidence against Dr Iqbal. Sub-inspector Md Shajahan Mondal placed the charge sheet against the lone accused on August 6 last year. Later, the Women and Children Repression Tribunal judge, Saleh Uddin Ahmed, framed charges against Dr Iqbal.
Asked about the allegation, the accused first refused to talk, saying the matter is in the court, but later requested the correspondent not to publish the report.
