A Dhaka court yesterday placed two people on a three-day remand each in a case filed in connection with the murder of ex-PDB chairman Khijir Khan, reports UNB.
Those who remanded are Tarequl alias Mithu, an active member of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), and Alek Bepary, driver of the vehicle used by the killers of Khijir Khan during the killing mission.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate M Rashed Talukdar passed the order after inspector M Azizur Rahman of Detective Branch (DB) of police of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) produced them before the court seeking a 10-day remand for each.
A team of DB police picked up Tarequl from Tangail while Alek Bepary from Mirpur area of the capital in separate drives. Two cameras and two laptops, presumably stolen, were also recovered from Tarequl.
On October 5, miscreants slaughtered former chairman of Power Develop-ment Board (PDB) Khijir Khan, 66, also a so-called pir, at his Khanka Sharif (gathering place of followers) at Gudaraghat in the city’s Madhya Badda area.
Khijir Khan was killed by Islamic extremists following a conflict over religious ideology, claimed the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan
Police (DMP).
“As Khijir Khan was a so-called pir and his activities were contradictory to religious ideology, it was our responsibility as believers to kill him,” Joint Commissioner (DB) Monirul Islam told reporters quoting Tarequl alias Mithu, an activist of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) arrested on Wednesday night in connection with the murder.
Briefing reporters at DMP media centre, Monirul Islam also said a team of DB police picked up Tarequl from Tangail while Alek Bepary from Mirpur area of the capital during their separate drives.
Two cameras and two laptops, presumably stolen, were also recovered from Tarequl, he said.
Monir said Tarequl confessed to the law enforces during interrogations that he had taken part in the killing mission with seven other killers and they used Alek Bepary’s vehicle during the mission.
Tarequl is a member of JMB Suicide Squad and directly involved in the 17th August, 2005 near-simultaneous explosions that took place in 63 out of 64 districts, the police officer said. He had been arrested and put behind the bars. He was released in 2010 after serving a 5-year jail term, said Monir.
When freed, Mithu tried to reorganize JMB and planned to kill the people who believe in Majar and pir, said Monir adding that he along with other JMB members killed Khijir Khan as per the plan.
