The government yesterday filed two petitions with the Supreme Court seeking an early date for hearing on the review petitions filed by death-row war criminals Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid and Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.
The attorney general’s office filed the petitions just a day after the two war crimes convicts filed review petitions for reconsideration of the apex court verdict that upheld their death penalty awarded by the International Crimes Tribunal for their wartime offences.
Talking to reporters, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said the petitions were filed for early hearing of the review petitions. “We filed the petitions so that the apex court can fix a date for early hearing on the review petitions. These review petitions should be heard and disposed of on a priority basis as per the apex court judgment in war criminal Abdul Quader Mollah’s case,” he added.
In response to a query, he said they would place the petitions before the chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on October 21 for fixing a date of hearing.
On Wednesday, both the death-row convicts - Jamaat leader Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid and BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury- filed separate review petitions with the Supreme Court for reconsideration of its verdict upholding their death penalty.
Later, Principal Counsel for both convicts, Advocate Khandakar Mahbub Hossain, at a press briefing, said the apex court would release Ali and Salauddin if it considers their review petitions properly.
“I hope the apex court will not dispose of the petitions hurriedly and it will consider our prayer mentioned in the review petitions,” said Khandakar.
On July 17, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) sentenced Mujahid to death for killing intellectuals during the War of Liberation in 1971. Later, he moved to the Appellate Division against the verdict. But the apex court, on June 16, upheld the tribunal’s verdict of death penalty.
On July 29, the apex court upheld the verdict of the then ICT-1 that condemned Salauddin Quader to death for committing crimes against humanity, including rape and mass killing, during the Liberation War, 43 years ago.
On October 1, 2013, the then ICT-1 found the BNP standing committee member guilty of crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation and sentenced him to death.
On October 29 the same year, Salauddin filed an appeal with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against the ICT-1 verdict.
