24 Bangladeshis return after serving jail term in India

Twenty-four Bangladeshis, including 11 teenagers, returned home on Friday after languishing in Indian jail for two and a half years. “They went to India in 2016, enticed by promises of good jobs,” said Abul Bashar, officer-in-charge of Benapole Checkpost Immigration Police. Indian police arrested them when they were travelling to Bangalore and a court jailed them for two and half years for crossing border without valid documents. They were handed over to Benapole Immigration Police after serving their sentences. Bashar said they hailed from Narail, Satkhira and Jashore.

Man held for blackmailing, raping schoolgirl

A man accused of blackmailing and raping a female high school student for several years was arrested yesterday morning from Naogaon. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) identified the man as Rahim Badsha, 40, son of Ekramul Haq of Telkupi village in Shibganj upazila. “Badsha has been raping the girl for five years,” Squadron Leader Syed Abdullah Al Murad, Rab’s Chapainawabganj camp commander, told the media. He was a clerk at Toilkupi High School where the victim was a student. “He secretly took a picture of the girl in a compromising situation and threatened to spread it. Badsha raped the victim regularly over the years,” Murad said. “Her ordeal did not end even after she passed her Secondary School Certificate exams last year and got into a college,” the Rab officer said. Badsha went into hiding when the victim’s family filed a case with Shibganj police on March 18 after learning about the ordeal. RAB raided a house in Sapahar upazila’s Sonadanga village acting on a tip-off and arrested Badsha. The elite force also seized evidence, including video footages. “The rapist was trying to flee to India through Sapahar border but we arrested him before that,” the RAB officer said. “He has confessed to blackmailing and raping the girl.”

Road accident kills driver

A CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver was killed and four others were injured as the CNG plunged into a roadside ditch on the Sirajganj-Soydabad road in Thakurtek area under sadar upazila of the district yesterday. The deceased was identified as Israel Hossain, 22, hailed from Zeedhuri village under Belkuchi upazila. Fire Service sources said the accident occurred when the auto-rickshaw fell into a roadside ditch as the driver lost control over the steering wheels in the morning in the Thakurtek area, leaving Israel dead on the spot. The injured people were admitted to a local hospital.

52 arrested in Satkhira

Law enforcers, in special drives arrested 52 persons including two drug traders from eight upazilas of the district in last 12-hour ending at 8am yesterday morning. Law enforcers also seized 150 pieces of Yaba tablets and 100 grams of Ganja during the drives. Sources with the district police said they were picked up from different areas of the district. During the drives, Satkhira Sadar police arrested 10 persons, Kalaroa Thana police arrested 10 persons, Tala Thana police arrested four persons, Kaliganj Thana police arrested six persons, Shyamnagar Thana police arrested six persons, Assasuni Thana police arrested eight persons including a drug trader along with 100 grams of Ganja, Patkelghata Thana police arrested four persons and Debhata police arrested three persons. The arrested people are accused in several cases, including charges of subversive activities, filed with different police stations in the district. Meanwhile, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive detained a drug trader along with 150 pieces of Yaba tablets from Debhata upazila of the district. Later, the detained person was handed over to the Debhata Thana police, RAB said.
