Tri-annual conference of Tangail district AL is going to be held on October 18 after 11 years. Enthusiasm has been created among the councilors, delegates, leaders and the activists of AL and its allies as the council is going to be held after a long time. They are getting the opportunity to choose their leaders. Tangail district is constituted with 12 upazilas, one thana and 10 municipalities. The council of the district was held in 2004. Council of most of the municipalities and upazilas has been completed. Central AL leaders have urged the district units to complete the councils by December.
Tangail district AL has been split into two groups. One is led by Siddiki family and headed by Khan family. Abdul Latif SIddiki, his brothers - Abdul Kader Siddiki BU, Murad Siddiki and Azad SIddiki - led the faction and dominated Tangail AL previously. After expulsion of Kader Siddiki from AL four brothers of Khan family-Amanur Rahman Khan Rana MP, Shahidur Rahman Khan Mukti, Zahidur Rahman Khan Kakon and Saniat Khan Bappa – are spearheading AL in Tangail. But after the assassination of AL leader Farook Ahmed, the four brothers have been accused in the murder case. They have been absconding for about one year. Nahar Ahmed, wife of slain AL leader Farook Ahmed, who led the anti-Khan family movement, have to lime light.
President of Tangail district AL Shamsur Rahman Khan Shahjahan has died due to old-age complications. Some other senior leaders have also passed away in the past 11 years. Acting president has been carrying out the party activities.Hectic lobbying by aspirants is going on for the two vital posts of president and secretary.
Fazlur Rahman Khan Farook sitting secretary of Tangail district AL and administrator of Tangail district council, vice-president of district AL Advocate Abdur Razzaque are the two serious candidates for the post of president. Ex-minister Dr. Abdur Razzaque MP of Tangail-1 (Madhupur-Dhanbari) constituency said he thinks the
councilors will choose competent leaders and 439 councilors.
