Students of Mohabbatpur Government Primary School (No. 27), located in Mohabbatpur village under No. 3 Kalochow Uttar union under Hjiagnj upazila, are taking their lessons  in the open for want of class rooms. The school building has become so dilapidated that it can crumble any time.

Elderly villagers told this correspondent that a few social workers had set up the school in 1912 to provide primary education to rural children. Later, it the building was developed to some extent in 1968, but there has been no renovation in the last 54 years. A Class II student, Nusrat Jahan said, “Our school building may collapse any time. Please write something about it. Please write to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for a new building.”

Nusrat's father, Md Sultan Ahmed Tipu, said: “The school building is too old for holding classes. We're scared to send our children to school.” Other guardians expressed similar views.

Fearing that the building could collapse any time, the teachers take classes outside under big banyan trees, said the head teacher, Shahnaj Begum. “I joined this school eight years ago. Time and again, I approached the local lawmaker, Maj. (Retd) Rafiqul Islam, and apprised him of the situation. I have submitted applications to grant a new school building. But nothing has been done till now,” she added. The situation becomes really bad on stormy and rainy days. On such days, classes are not held and studies are hampered.

There are about 200 students and five teachers in the school. The results obtained by the students of this school in public exams are also satisfactory. The school managing committee (SMC) president, Md Jashimuddin, told this correspondent: “We tried very hard to have this school included in the government’s development scheme, but failed.”Contacted, upazila primary education officer Md Shahjahan said: “The school building is really in a risky state. A new academic building for this school is in the process of being included in the government's development programme.”
