Students at Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hostel of Eden College are in fear of a fatal accidents as cracks appeared in the building on Wednesday night.
On Wednesday night, two rows of tiles cracked on the 5th floor of the building. Resident students began to panic and became resentful after learning about the cracks. Many students have left their rooms and are staying outside the hall for safety.
Earlier in 2015, the hall building also tilted slightly on one side after an earthquake. Most of the cracks have been noticed on the second, fifth and sixth floors of the building.
Fardina Ahmed, a resident student of the hall, told The Independent, “We're worried about the safety of this building. If the authorities concerned don't take any immediate step, it could lead to a catastrophy. We do not want to face another tragedy like the Rana Plaza incident.”
Construction of 11-storey Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall ended in 2013. After an earthquake in 2015, some cracks started appear and the hall building tilted slightly on one side.
Following the incident, the college authorities vacated the hall for an indefinite period. Later, engineers inspected the hall building and it was opened again following a ‘no risk’ report. However, many students said they don’t feel confident over the assurance and fear that a serious accident can take place at any time.
