Death of Abrar

Owner of Suprovat bus arrested

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

The owner of the Suprovat Paribahan bus that killed Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) student Abrar Ahmed was held by the police as he directed the conductor to carry on wheels in absence of the main driver. Masudur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Poilice (DMP) yesterday told this at a press briefing as they detained the owner of the Suprovat Paribahan Nani Gopal Sarker on Thursday.

However, a Dhaka Court yesterday placed Nani Gopal Sarker, 42, on a three-day remand in a case filed over the death of Abrar. Kazi Shariful Islam, the investigation officer, applied for three-day remand before court for further investigation and the court granted the appeal after the hearing.

"Acting on a tip-off, a team  of Detective Police (DB) of north division arrested the owner. He was arrested from Mugda area of Dhaka on Thursday morning,” said the Commissioner.  Masudur Rahman said the owner told the conductor to flee away and he did accordingly.

‘Suprobhat Paribahan’ which ran over Abrar Ahmed was in a hurry to flee the scene after it had earlier hit another student Synthia Islam Mukta (20) in Banshtala area of Shahjadpur leaving her injured, said the commissioner.

“They (bus authorities) were responsible for the treatment of victims. But the owner of the bus, told the conductor to run away with the bus after knowing that he (conductor) had no driving license. Later, conductor Yasin Arafat ran over Abrar while fleeing the first accident scene. But if the owner did not tell them to do so, the incident won’t have taken place,” said Masudur Rahman.

Masudur Rahman said Nani Gopal Sarker bought the killer bus two and a half years ago. But he did not change route permit yet as the route permit of the bus was from Dhaka to Brahmanbaria. However, the bus was moving on Sadarghat to Gazipur route as Suprovat Company.

The time span between the two accidents was just 10 minutes, according to the case statement.

On March 27, Yasin was held from Chandpur and the bus helper Md Ibrahim from Dhaka’s Madhya Badda the next day.

Earlier on April 2, the conductor of Suprobhat Paribahan Yasin Arafat confessed to a magistrate that he was driving the bus that ran over and killed Abrar.

“I was driving the bus following the instruction of its owner as driver Mohammad Sirajul Islam was caught by passengers and handed him over to police after he had hit and injured a college girl in Banshtala area of Shahjadpur the same day,” said conductor Yasin Arafat.
