2 ‘carjackers’ killed in ‘gunfight’

Two alleged members of an inter-district carjacking gang were killed in a gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in the Sat Rasta intersection of Tejgaon area in the capital early yesterday. The deceased were identified as Naim (35) and Jamal (38). Mohiuddin Farooki, the company commander of RAB-2 and, additional superintendent of RAB, confirmed about the incident to The Independent and told that apart from that two killed in gunfight, RAB arrested two other people named Hanif and Litu from Gazipur in connection with their suspected involvement in hijacking of car on Thursday night. The elite force commander said, “After interrogation of Hanif and Litu, RAB came to know that the members of a carjacking syndicate will hand over a snatched vehicle

in exchange for money in Dhaka’s Tejgaon on Friday morning.” Based on the information they provided during interrogation, RAB set up a check post in the BG Press area around 4:30 am to nab the other gang members.  “The gang members arrived in the area in a pick-up van. When RAB signaled them to stop, ignoring the instruction of the RAB team, the gang members tried to flee and opened fire on the elite force. RAB retaliated and the two were wounded in the crossfire. They were rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors on duty declared them dead,” said Farooki.

“The bodies are kept at the DMCH morgue for autopsy. The deceased had multiple cases filed against them in several police stations. A pistol, four rounds of bullet, two sharp weapons and some equipment used to break lock were recovered from the spot,” Farooki added.
