College student among 5 killed in road crashes

AGENCIES, Dhaka

At least five people, including a college student and two others in the capital, were killed in road crashes yesterday. Students blocked the Mostafa Majir intersection of Rampura-Demra Road after a first-year student was killed in a road accident yesterday morning. The victim, 19-year-old Ibne Tasnim Iram, was a student at Gulam Mostafa College. He lived with his parents at Amulia Purbapara in Demra.

A passenger bus of ‘Ramzan Paribahan’ hit his cycle, killing him on the spot, said Sub-Inspector Mozammel Hossain of Demra Police Station. Locals alleged that two buses of Ramzan Paribahan and Shadhin Paribahan were having a race on the street when one of those ran Iram over. The buses fled the scene after the accident. Students of Gulam Mostafa College and locals came out on the streets as news of Iram’s death spread. They put up barricades on the road, halting vehicular movement. Angry protesters also vandalised around 15 vehicles during the road block.

The road blockades were removed around 4:00pm after the police high-ups went to the spot and assured the protesting people of taking actions. Meanwhile, two youths died in a road crash on Khilgaon flyover in Dhaka yesterday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Noman, 16, and Tuhin, 17, said police.

The duo was on a motorcycle when the driver, one of them, lost control and rammed into the railing of the flyover around 4:15pm, Sub-Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital’s police outpost, told reporters.

They were rushed to the emergency unit of DMCH where the doctors declared them dead. In Jashore, 23-year-old man named Jamal Hossain was critically injured after a speeding truck ran him over on Jashore-Chuknagar road at Sundolpur Bazar around 3am.

He was taken to upazila health complex but doctors suggested shifting him to Jashore General Hospital. Doctors at the hospital pronounced him dead after he was taken there, said Dr Maruf of Manirampur Upazila Health Complex.

Jamal was the son of Khakhan, a resident of Agarhati village. In Panchagarh, a mentally-challenged teenage boy was killed when a speeding truck ran him over on Debiganj-Demra Highway in Debiganj upazila at noon. The deceased was identified as Munir Mukit, 12, son of Moshiur Rahman of Collagepara in the upazila.

Rabiul Islam, officer-in-charge of Debiganj Police Station, said Mukit was riding a bicycle on the highway when a truck hit him, killing him on the spot.
