With the arrest of the Awami League MP from Gaibandha-1, Manjurul Islam Liton, peace-loving people have heaved sighs of relief thinking that law is taking its own course. Detective Police arrested him from the house of one of his relatives in the city’s Uttara area Wednesday night in connection with the shooting of a minor boy. The arrest was made hours after the Supreme Court (SC) stayed a High Court (HC) order that directed Liton to surrender before a lower court by October 18. The arrest shows that none is above law in the country. We welcome the government’s tough stand in this matter.
Over the years, a culture has developed in the country that the powerful ones have the license to do whatever their minds desire. MP Liton is no exception to that. The actions and deeds of the public representatives like Liton belie the promises they make to the people. The tightening of screws against persons like Liton augurs well for the country. Last year, a high official of RAB, who is the son-in-law of an influential Cabinet Minister, was arrested in connection with the sensational seven murders in Narayanganj. A few months back, the son of a female MP in the capital was arrested for shooting to death two people. The main mastermind of minor Rajon murder, Quamrul, is being brought back from Saudi Arabia for trial. Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) has called the Administrator of Dhaka District Council for her alleged involvement in various corruptions. All these give a clear indication of the government’s intolerance to criminal activities. We welcome the government’s uncompromising posture.
In the past, criminal activities of the ruling party leaders and workers tarnished the image and eroded the credibility of successive governments. Patronage by the high-ups was greatly responsible for that. All the achievements of the government will pale into insignificance if the elements who act detrimental to people’s welfare are not reined in. People of the country want to live in peace. They do not want to be persecuted by the elements who enjoy the shelter of the government.
It is evident that the incumbent government will not spare anyone involved in crimes and corruptions and other misdeeds regardless of party affiliations. This will send a clear message to those who are in positions of authority about the government’s resolve to dispense justice fairly and impartially in each case. Thus, it is expected they will learn to restrain themselves before it is too late. But the government’s dedicated actions must be sustained ; the enthusiasm to do justice must not be allowed to peter out.
