Students of Barishal University (BU) continued their protests for the ninth day yesterday, demanding the vice-chancellor's resignation. Agitated students held a rally in front of the academic building of BU in the morning.
Students started protesting on March 26 after they were allegedly excluded from the university's Independence Day programme. On the same day, VC Imamul Huq made a remark calling protesting students “razakar-er bachcha.”
This remark agitated the students and they began protesting. Later on March 28, by a notice, authorities shut down the university for an indefinite period.
According to the notice, the university would remain closed for an indefinite period from March 28 for the sake of safety and security of its students, teachers, staff, and also in order to maintain the law and order situation in and around the campus. The students were also instructed to vacate the residential halls and dormitories.
BU VC Imamul Haque, on March 29, in a press release apologised for his remark. His apology, has hardly quelled the fury in the campus. On the 9th day of protests students demanded that the VC apologise before the students for his “razakar-er bachcha” remark and resign from his post. They said the agitation programme will continue until the demands are met. They also threatened to go for hunger strike if their demands are not fulfilled.
The agitating students handed over a memorandum with the demands to president and prime minister through the deputy commissioner of Barishal on Monday.
VC Imamul Haque left Barisal on March 27 to attend a meeting of the university syndicate at the liaison office of the university in Dhaka.
