Around fifty examinees, who took part in Rajshahi University admission test last year, formed human chain on the campus yesterday protesting the authorities' decision to discontinue opportunity to sit twice for admission tests.
Students of different colleges of Rajshahi formed the human chain in front of university senate building around 11am with banners and festoons. They also submitted a memorandum to vice chancellor.
Earlier, the RU authorities decided to allow only freshly passed HSC students to appear at its admission tests for a single year from the 2019-20 academic session, aiming to create an equal opportunity for all the aspirants. The decision was made to eliminate unequal competition between regular and irregular students, and discourage tuition at coaching centres.
Oliul Islam, a student of Rajshahi City College, said “Data showed that almost half of those who enrol in the RU in an academic year are students of the previous academic session. Around 200 to 300 seats remain vacant on the campus every year. What problem will be created if authorities allow us for second time?” he questioned.
Wasif, another student of the same college, claimed that “Medical colleges are giving chances to sit for second time and dreams of many students are coming true. However, he urged the authorities to take steps to allow them for second time.”
On the other hand, authorities said that taking advantage of the opportunity of appearing at the test for a second time, many fresh students, who get enrolled in RU, stop attending classes and take preparations for the admission test again. When they fail to succeed in their attempt, they go for readmission to their previous department causing serious academic indiscipline for them.
From the academic year 2016-2017, candidates were not allowed to appear for the second time in RU entrance examinations as the university authority closed the practice through a meeting of the academic council in December, 2015. They also allowed second time on 3 August, 2017 under academic session 2017-18 and continue 2018-19. However, they also announced that no students for second time will be allowed from 2019-20 sessions for the first year students of the campus.
Proctor Prof Dr Luthfor Rahman said, local students formed a human chain and gave us a written paper in favour of their demands. But last year, academic council decided not to allow them to sit for second time. No scope to consider the issue.”
University Pro-vice chancellor Prof Dr Chowdhury Zakaria said, “Other universities are discounting to allow them for the second time and we will do so.”
