The 10th edition of the eight-day long drama festival titled ‘Syed Badruddin Hossain Smriti Natya Utsab’ (Syed Badruddin Hossain Memorial Theatre Festival) will begin today at the Bangladesh Shilapakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital
On the occasion of 96th birth anniversary of lifetime president of Padatik Natya Sangsad Syed Badruddin Hossain, Padatik Natya Sangsad has organised the festival, which will be taking place at three theatre halls of BSA simultaneously.
The eight-day festival will feature 20 plays by 16 local and four Indian theatre troupes.
The inaugural ceremony of the festival, followed by an award ceremony, will be held today at the National Theatre Hall of BSA, where noted theatre personalities Ramendu Majumdar, M Hamid, Mamunur Rashid and Padatik president Syed Tasnin Hossain will be present. This year, the troupe will honour two eminent thespians, Liaquat Ali Lucky and Golam Sarwar, with ‘Syed Badruddin Hossain Memorial Award’ for their contributions to theatre.
The opening day of the festival will present two local and one Indian plays. Indian troupe Beejpur Chaturthasutra will stage its play ‘Dakat Hiru’ at National Theatre Hall, while local troupe Nagarik Natya Sampraday will stage its 46th production ‘Galileo’ at Experimental Theatre Hall and Natyachakra will stage its mono-drama ‘Eka Ek Nari’ (A Woman Alone) at Studio Theatre Hall.
The festival will also feature theatre shows by Indian troupes Purgatory, Koshba Artha and Amta Parichoy, while local troupes Prachyanat, Stage One, Theatre (Baily Road), BotTola, Open Space Theatre, Bunan Theatre, Natyam Repertory, Dristipat Natya Sangsad, Dhrupadi Acting Space, Bangla Theatre, Niravaran Theatre, Shunyan Repertory, Batighar and the host troupe Padatik Natya Sangsad will stage their productions during the eight-day festival.
Besides, a seminar on Syed Badruddin Hossain will be arranged on April 11 as part of the festival, where awardees of this year will read out essays.
Padatik Natya Sangsad has been organising the festival since 2010 as a tribute to the troupe’s late president Syed Badruddin Hossain, who served as Padatik’s president till his death in 2009. Padatik Natya Sangsad has been staging theatrical productions since 1978. l
