Outgoing president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Advocate Zainul Abedin yesterday demanded the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who has been languishing in jail since February 2018.
After citing his achievement during his two-year tenure as president of the SCBA, the outgoing president made the demand at a press briefing at the Supreme Court auditorium yesterday afternoon.
In a written statement, the SCBA president said, “The country’s democratic leader and three- time prime minister of the country has been in jail for long, which is politically motivated. Her health condition has been deteriorating day by day as she is seriously ill. I am seeking her release at the end of my tenure.”
He also alleged that the government has no good intention to release the BNP chairperson from jail. Although the High Court (HC) granted her bail in the cases, the government repeatedly moved before the Appellate Division for staying the HC order.
The outgoing SCBA president said that the HC granted bail to BNP chief in Cumilla arson attack. And all of the accused in the case are now on bail. But, the attorney general office has moved before the Appellate Division for staying the HC order that granted bail to BNP chief in the case, which reflects that the government has no good intention to release the BNP chief, he noted.
In response to a query, SCBA secretary Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokan said that no one from her home or lawyer file petition seeking her release in parole.
