Ctg metropolitan police gets 1,294 new members

Staff Reporter, Ctg

Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) got 1,294 more new members. Prime Minster’s Office (PMO) approved the new workforces on Tuesday and sent the file in this regard to the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Home Ministry sent a fax to CMP after issuing notification in this regard on Wednesday. The new workforces to join CMP include an additional commissioner, two deputy commissioners, eight additional deputy commissioners, seven assistant commissioners, 15 inspectors, 200 sub-inspectors, 250 assistant sub-inspectors, 40 sergeants, 270 assistant sub-inspectors and around 700 constables and other staffs. The number is the highest in the 37 years’ history of CMP since its inception. After two and a half years of hectic efforts and bureaucratic procedure in the ministries concerned, a total of 1,294 workforces have been allocated for the CMP. Since after its inception in 1978,  the organisation has not got such a huge number of manpower at a time. In 2011, the CMP got 430 members which was the highest allocation for the CMP.
Currently, CMP runs its activities of maintaining law and order with only 5,700 members of police for around 60 lakh city dwellers. Therefore, the organisation has long been facing acute manpower crisis to maintain law and order in 60-square-mile city. “We’ve received a faxed message regarding approval of 1294 new manpower for CMP. Police Headquarters will take necessary initiatives to appoint new manpower in these posts,” said AKM Shaidur Rahman, additional police commissioner (Traffic, Finance and Administration) of CMP. According to CMP sources, on  February 4, 2013, CMP sent a proposal for recruitment of 5,000 manpower in it’s headquarters.
The police headquarters sent the CMP proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs after giving approval. Ministry of Home Affairs approved the file in July, 2014 and sent the file to the Ministry of Finance.
In the first week of June this year, the Ministry of Finance curtailed the manpower 5000 to 1294 and finalised to allocate 1294 manpower for CMP.
