They want to go back to villages

Ninety-three per cent of women who have left their villages to make the city their home said they would return to their villages if provided surety of work and sources of income.   A report published by Bangladesh Human Rights Implementation Association (BHRIA) on “Grammen Narira Shohora Kmon Asa” on Thursday on the occasion of the 15th World Rural Women’s Day revealed that a majority of women living with their families in city slums are of the view that while cities afford facilities, mental satisfaction is lacking unlike in rural areas.
The report was prepared after interviewing 60 women living in slums in the city on their views about urban versus rural life. It was published at a press conference as part of a project named SCWHR with the help of “Manusher Jonno Foundation” at BHRIA Building in the city. According to the report, both men and women feel the city offers plenty of work opportunities but food is much contaminated here. They can send their children to any educational institution which suits their pocket. Women are more conscious about their rights in the city and early marriages are few as women can express their opinions freely. Medical treatment is easily available with various government and non-government medical hospitals located in the city. On the flip side though, various drugs are available in the city and there is every possibility of their children getting addicted to drugs.
Most women participants said they would return to their villages provided better work and other facilities were made available there. Some of them said more initiatives were needed to preserve women’s rights in rural areas and only then women would be able to lead a peaceful life in villages.
Shuili Begum from Kollanpur slum said in villages, women have to face a lot of familial and societal restrictions with most families not permitting their women to work outdoor. “But if women can get a work permit in rural areas, most of us would prefer to live in villages,” she said.
