Fight against repression recognised

Tunisia’s National Dialogue Quartet won the Nobel Peace Prize on Oct 9 for the group’s contribution to building democracy after the ‘Jasmine Revolution’ of 2011. File photo taken in 2013.

The Quartet, made up of the General Labour Union; the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts; the Tunisian Human Rights League; and the Tunisian Order of Lawyers, was formed in the summer of 2013 to act as mediator between the warring parties as the country was sliding towards civil war.

The 2011 revolution was an intensive campaign of civil resistance, which began on Dec 18, 2010 and led to the ousting of autocratic president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011, after 23 years in power.
Unemployment, inflation, corruption and[lack of political rights had brewed discontent, and the self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi on Dec 17, finally lit the spark of revolt.
