Hundreds of labourers of Rajshahi Jute Mills staged a demonstration in front of the mill gate in Kantakhali area of the city demanding their salary and allowances yesterday. At around 11:00am they tried to block the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in front of the mill gate, however at the request of the law enforcement, they cleared the highway and gathered in the mill area where they organized a way side meeting.
At the meeting the labourers said they have not been paid their salary from the January this year. As well as, all kinds of allowances are also been closed up. That is why; including pay arrears, implementation of wage commission, festival allowance they raised 9-point demand.
The movement will continue until demand is made, labourers added. Zillur Rahman, president of Rajshahi Jute Mill Labourers Union, said they will organise a stick-procession today (Monday in front of the mill gate and also threatened to call 72-hour strike which starts from next day (April 2). During the strike all labourers of Rajshahi Jute Mill will not participate in any kind of work, he added.
