“Goal! Goal!” After several rounds of fierce competition, the Thai team finally won 1: 0 with players cheering and the audience applauding wildly. This is a cultural exchange event held during a patrol operation along the Mekong River jointly launched by China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.

According to statistics, as of September 27, 2015, China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand have launched 38 such joint patrol operations. In the key waters and areas of the Golden Triangle, they have carried out 35 joint checks, rescued 135 merchant ships, performed anti-drug publicity to 30,860 persons and escorted more than 700 merchant ships. Their work includes patrols of the whole or sections of the Mekong River, investigation and seizing operations both on land and water, testing of law enforcement ships and cultural exchange activities.

As observed, with joint patrols and law enforcement deepening along the Mekong River, the people-to-people exchanges among the four countries are getting increasingly closer, and the cultural exchanges are especially popular with the young patrol and law enforcement officers. The Mekong flows through six countries. Although different peoples living along the river speak different languages, they have similar living and eating habits and can convey friendship and communicate information through gestures, eye contacts, smiles and other facial expressions.

In addition, the patrol fleets have competed in the “Heart-to-Heart Mekong Friendship Cup” 5-a-side football match. Other cultural activities include off-court basketball shooting, ring throwing, ping-pong ball blowing and pinball picking.

With the deepening of cultural exchanges among the four parties, the level and effectiveness of the joint patrols and law enforcement operations along the Mekong are continuously improving, and the recognition, participation and sense of safety are significantly enhanced in the people living along the river, turning the Mekong into a civilized and happy river.
