Young Bangladeshi director Abu Shahed Emon’s Oscar nominated film ‘Jalaler Golpo’, will again see its global premiere in this year’s International Competition Newcomer Films at the official programme of the 64th ‘International Film festival Mannheim-Heidelberg’ (IFFMH), the second-oldest film festival in Germany.
Film director Abu Shahed Emon, producer Faridur Reza Sagor and Ibne Hasan Khan on behalf of Impress Telefilm are invited to attend the festival.
A total number of 22 films from all over the world, including Denmark, Uruguay, Norway, Mexico, Netherlands, Iran, Argentina, Canada and France have been invited to compete for the ‘Grand Newcomer Award’. Aside of the newly renamed ‘Grand Newcomer Award – Main Award of Mannheim-Heidelberg, the international jury also awards the ‘Special Newcomer Award’ and the ‘Special Achievement Award’ for an outstanding performance as an actor, direction, screenplay etc. as well as the Special Mention of the Jury.
Beginning from October 9, the closing ceremony of the festival will be held with an Award Ceremony: Grand Newcomer Award on October 24 in Mannheim Stadthaus, while ‘Jalaler Golpo’ will be screened on October 22.
The story of the film ‘Jalaler Golpo’ shows that an abandoned baby is fished out of a river in Bangladesh, as biblical Moses once was. Miraj, who rescues him out of the water, names him Jalal and raises him. But he appears to be cursed. That at least is what the villagers believe after a series of misfortunes that the foundling is blamed for. And so poor Miraj feels forced to abandon him to his fate on the river again. In his first feature film, Abu Shahed Emon visualizes a host of contemporary political and social problems in Bangladesh, from superstition to the omnipresence of politically motivated corruption, to the blatant disregard of women’s rights. He was inspired by an actual event in 2011. In broad daylight and in the presence of police, a boy, suspected of thieving, was beaten to death by an angry mob.
The key cast of the film includes, Toukir Ahmed, Mosharraf Karim, Moushumi Hamid, Sharmimala, Nur-e-Alam Nayan and Metali Das. The central character ‘Jalal’ is jointly played by newcomer Arafat Rahman and Mohammad Emon.
Produced under the banner of the Boutique Cinema Project of Impress Telefilm, ‘Jalaler Golpo’ saw its county release this month and currently being screened at Bashundhara Star Cineplex and Jamuna Blockbuster cinemas.
Before its country release, the film Jalaler Golpo’ travelled to all over the world and received best film, best actor awards in the 19th edition of the ‘Avanca International Film Festival’ in Portugal, enjoyed its world premiere in the main competitive category named ‘New Current’ of the festival, and director Emon received the best newcomer director award in 7th Jaipur Film Fesitval in India. In addition, the film was also screened as the only Bangladeshi film at the International Film Festival of India 2014’ (IFFI) in Goa, India.
