Nation achieves glaring success in sanitation, hygiene

RANGPUR: The country has already achieved glaring success in the sanitation and hygiene improving all indexes in the public health sector on its way to build a middle income and subsequently a developed healthier nation.
The views were expressed yesterdayat a post-rally discussion arranged in observance of the ‘National Sanitation Campaign October- 2015’ and ‘World Hand Washing Day- 2015’ in Panchagarh town with the theme of ‘Raise a hand for hygiene’, reports BSS.
Earlier, the district administration and Department of Public Health and Engineering (DPHE) jointly brought out a colourful rally from the deputy commissioner’s office before gathering at the discussion at Panchagarh Government auditorium.
Hundreds of people, including government and non-government officials, public representatives, teachers, students, adolescents, socio-cultural activists, community leaders, civil society members and elite participated in the rally.
With Executive Engineer of Panchagarh DPHE Mohammad Saiful Islam in the chair, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) of Panchagarh Mohammad Golam Azam attended and addressed the post-rally discussion as the chief guest.
The DPHE Executive Engineer informed that 89.25 percent population, totaling to 1,91,384 families, of the district have so far been brought under sanitation coverage with hygienic sanitary latrine facilities by September last.
The rest of 10.75 percent other families, still do not have sanitary latrines in their houses and all of them would be brought under full sanitation coverage very soon, he said.
The speakers highly lauded improvement in rural life standard following success achieved in sanitation, pure drinking water and healthcare services to rural people in recent years to maintain clean environment and good hygienic condition.
The awareness building activities on sanitation have created a successful social renaissance reducing the extent of waterborne diseases like
diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, hookworm, ringworm and others among rural people in recent years, they said.
The chief guest suggested for creating public awareness on health, hygiene, sanitation, personal hygiene, using safe drinking water and achieve cent percent sanitation coverage everywhere as soon as possible.
He urged all concerned to make the district 100 percent sanitised to achieve another mile stone after fulfilling targets of the MDGs on the way to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in future.
Later, the students of Panchagarh BP Government High School and Dokrowpara Government Primary School took part in separate hand washing programmes in the sub-himalayan district town.
Civil Surgeon of Panchagarh Ahad Ali, Mayor of Panchagarh municipality Tauhidul Islam and headmistress of Panchagarh Government Girls’ High School Rekha Rani Devi were present as the special guests.
