Three plays on Shilpakala stage today

This weekend, theatre lovers can plan to enjoy any of the three plays to be staged at three separate venues of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital. Today at 7pm, theatre troupe Natyam Repertory will stage its new play ‘Dear Liar’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall while Dhaka Theatre will stage its 47th production ‘Putra’  at the Studio Theatre Hall and Theatre (Arambag) will stage its 40th production ‘Draupadi Parampara’ in the evening.  

‘Dear Liar’ is based on the long-time correspondence between British playwright Goerge Bernard Shaw and British actress Patrick Campbel. Based on the book of ‘Dear Liar’ written by Jerome Kilty, Professor Abdus Selim has translated the play into Bangla while Irin Pervin Lopa is in its direction. Famed theatre actor Ataur Rahman and popular actress Aupee Karim have played as Bernard Shaw and Patrick Campbel respectively in the play.

On the other hand, directed by Shimul Yousuf, ‘Putra’ is one of the plays that renowned playwright Selim Al Deen finished just before his death in 2008. The play revolves around bewailing and lamentation of a couple for the death of their deceased son Manik. The cast of the play includes Esha Yousuf, Milu Chowdhury, Asaduzzaman Aman, Samiun Jahan Dola, Sajjad Ahmed Rajib, Rafiqul Islam, Shahzada Samrat Chowdhury and others.

Besides, written and directed by Prabir Dutta, ‘Draupadi Parampara’ depicts Draupadi’s sufferings in patriarchal society by showing her humiliation at the hands of the Kauravas after she was put on bet at a dice-game by Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava. In the play, Tahmina Akter, Akifa Alam and Yusha Antara will play the role of Draupadi.
