Meftahul Jannat Nipa, who lost her right leg in a road mishap in front of her school, has won a stipend in the talent pool. She learnt of the result at the Jashore General Hospital on Sunday evening. She is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. On getting the news, Nipa told her parents, “I’ve fulfilled your dream. But what is waiting for me?” Muslima Khatun, Nipa’s mother, told this to newsmen at the hospital. “The result did not make my daughter happy. She is unable to bear the pain,” she said. Doctors at the Jashore General Hospital have amputated Nipa’s right leg. She is a Class VI student of the Burujbagan Pilot Girls School and a former student of the Sabuj Kunri Pre-cadet School.
Nipa lost her right leg as a pick-up van of the Palli Bydut Samity crushed her limb while she fell from her school van after it was hit by the vehicle.
The accident occurred in front of her school around 8:30am on March 20.
Dr Abdur Rauf, a medical officer at the hospital’s orthopaedic department, told newsmen that the girl's right leg had to be amputated from beneath the knee. The operation had been successful, he said.
Nipa’s father, Rafiqul Islam, said his daughter had an excellent academic record. “She stood first in the admission test this year. She was also the first girl of her class at the pre-cadet school earlier,” he added.
“Nipa wanted to be a doctor. But now we are anxious about her future as she needs an artificial leg,” he said.
Abdul Awal, deputy commissioner of Jashore, told The Independent on Monday that he had visited the child at the hospital.
