It is encouraging to note that all mango orchards are in full bloom in Chapainawabganj district, signalling the possibility of a good production this year. Farmers and sources in the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said the temperature was favourable for flowering from the beginning of the season. If the weather condition remains congenial, the district will witness a good yield of mango. According to the sources, more than 83 per cent of mango trees have borne flowers. Last year, the mango production was 250,000 metric tons. Those related with the mango business are expecting a business volume of more than of Tk. 2,000 crore this year in Chapainawabganj district.
Mango is one of the prominent fruits of our country. Fruits are vital components of the daily diet and for meeting the demand for nutrition these should be included in every meal. Bangladesh enjoys generally a sub-tropical monsoon climate. A tropical location, lush greenery, moisture-rich loamy soil and production-friendly climate—all these make it one of the notable growers of a vast range of fruits. Most of these fruits perishable in nature are available in different seasons.
Though mango is available in a particular season it enjoys great nutritional value. Who can resist the temptation of tasting Surjapuri, Gopalbhog, Misribhog, Langra, Himsagor and Amropali varieties of mango that are available in plenty?
The problems facing the mango farmers should be addressed properly. Farmers should be provided with improved varieties of mango saplings. There are blights and other diseases that hamper mango production. So, insecticides should also be distributed among the mango growers. There are also problem of preserving mangoes. In the absence of preservation facility and cold storage huge quantities of mango get perished almost every year triggering financial losses to the growers. Diversified use of mango should also be ensured. There are fallow lands around houses of many people. Those can be brought under mango cultivation. The vast youth force can be employed in this task. It can solve unemployment problem greatly. A family can earn a substantial amount of money by selling mango and other fruits after meeting its demand. Many urban children prefer fast food to fruits. This is not a good sign. It is the responsibility of parents and relatives to convince their children to take fruits.
