AUW, Chevron launch science summer school

Asian University for Women (AUW) and Chevron on Monday launched the AUW Science Summer School, a residential programme, to help top secondary and high school students enter world-class science universities and careers.
“We offer mentorship from experts, mainly doctoral candidates from Stanford and other top American research universities,” Rubana Huq, a member of the AUW's Board of Trustees, also the managing director of Mohammadi Group, told the launching ceremony held in the city. Chevron-Bangladesh PGPA director Ismail Hussain Chowdhury and AUW registrar Dave Dowland addressed the function, among others.
The science summer school will help female scientists go to the next level, said Rubana Huq. Five weeks of engagement with math and physics will start on July 5 and end on August 8. Students of the Science Summer School will be engaging in math and physics lessons, mentorship from experts, and learning with like-minded peers. Upon successfully graduating from the programme, students will be prepared to hit the ground running as a math or physics scholar at the university level.
Graduates of the AUW Science Summer School will receive a certificate of merit from AUW and Chevron and leave with a powerful network of friends and mentors. Top performing students will additionally receive invitations to enroll at AUW as undergraduate students and may be eligible to secure partial or full scholarship support depending on their demonstrated financial need. Applications are due online or by mail by 30 April 2019.
Kazi Asaduzzaman Library opens today

A new library named after ‘Kazi Asaduzzaman Library’ will be inaugurated at Zeal Bangla Sugar Mills High School in Dewanganj upazila under Jamalpur district today.
Mahbubur Rahman Mukul, a meritorious student of this school, who is also joint secretary of the government and director BSCIC will inaugurate the library.
Former secretary of the government Dr Syed Nakib Muslim will present as chief guest. Besides, additional police super of Jamalpur Mostak Sarker, Dewanganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Golam Mostafa, Deawnganj municipality mayor Shah Newaj Shahanshah and managing director of Zeal Bangla Sugar Mills ASM Mutiullah will attend the inaugural ceremony. Professor Kazi Qaiyum Shishir, son of late Kazi Asaduzzaman, has set up the new library at a cost of Tk 30 lakh. His father Asaduzzaman was a veteran freedom fighter and a school teacher too.
