A modern circular bus service was launched yesterday between Dhanmondi and Azimpur in Dhaka. It was inaugurated by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor Sayeed Khokon.
This bus service will cover Dhanmondi, Science Lab, New Market, and Azimpur areas in a bid to reduce traffic jam in Dhanmondi and adjoining areas.
The Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) will supervise the service that will cost each passenger Tk. 10, Tk. 20 and Tk. 30, depending on the distance travelled. The service will initially have 20 air-conditioned BRTC buses that will pick up and drop passengers from 36 points on the circular route. This service is part of a plan of the Bus Route Rationalisation Committee, which was formed to improve the bus services in and around the city. The DSCC mayor will serve as the chief of a committee to manage the bus service through a firm.
Speaking at the inaugural event, Khokon said: “The committee is working according to the guidelines laid down by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. We are optimistic that this service will reduce gridlocks in parts of Dhaka, ensure better customer services and road discipline, and make a positive impact on this city.”
“The safety of citizens is our top priority. We'll ensure the highest standard of service at the lowest cost possible,” he added.
Meanwhile, at the inauguration programme, the newly elected mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Md Atiqul Islam, said: “It's a combined effort by everyone in this city. It will ensure safer roads and the effects will be visible soon.”
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said: “People have become more aware of road safety now. Most bikers now use helmets. But discipline is still lacking in the public transport sector. But I hope with these initiatives, discipline in the transport sector will become evident within 15 days."
“Along with the newly launched bus service on these routes, two more services—in Uttara and Motijheel—will soon be introduced. This initiative will lessen the number of private and non-motorised vehicles on the streets,” he also said.
“We do not want casualties on the roads anymore ,” he added. The inauguration function was chaired by DTC chairman Khandakar Rakibur Rahman. It was attended by BRTA chairman Moshiar Rahman and BRTC chairman Farid Uddin Bhuiyan.
