Noirit Mustapha
2 years after the finale of the second season, Senki Zesshou Symphogear invaded the airwaves again with a third, and slated to be final season. This time around however, they face a new enemy that threatens not just the balance of the world, but also their own personal existences. After the main three heroines actively help out around the world, while the other three remain on monitored probation, a new menace arises in the form of alchemy. Carol Malus Dienheim, an alchemist seeking vengeance on the world for her father’s death, appears with her four robotic and immensely powerful “dolls” in front of our heroines. She claims to be carrying out her mission of dissecting the world to “know” it better, and that involves destroying all creation unless the Symphogears can stop her.
At this point in time, the show is still carrying on its unique flow and style of grandiose and cheesy action. With the stakes being higher and the fights feeling more personal now however, each character gets their own little bit of character development as the plot progresses as well, so at least the show knows how to do its heroes right. In fact, Hibiki herself goes through the most daunting development as she has to come to terms with and face a ghost from her past. Unfortunately, the series still also has the flaw of having very one-dimensional villains with their dumb motives. Carol says everything she does is as her father wanted, but given the flashbacks that show him as such a kind-hearted person even in his death, that motive becomes harder and harder to believe.
Besides all of that, the animation and sound production have gotten much better since before, along with all the insert songs. One minor gripe some people almost might have is that the finale seems rather underwhelming compared to the previous season’s. Nevertheless, anyone who liked the first two seasons will definitely find GX worthwhile as a whole.
