2 Rohingyas among 6 killed in ‘gunfights’

Six persons, two Rohingyas among them, were killed in separate "gunfights" with law enforcement agencies in Cox's Bazar, Gazipur and Dhaka yesterday (Wednesday). In Cox’s Bazar, two Rohingyas were killed in a "gunfight" with the Border Guars Bangladesh (BGB), in the Kharangkhali area of Teknaf upazila, around 4:30am.

Teknaf BGB-2 Battalion Acting Commander Shariful Islam Jomadder said: “A patrol team encountered two Rohingyas, trying to trespass into Bangladesh territory from Myanmar through the Kharangkhali-Naf river border. The trespassers opened fire on the BGB team when they tried to stop them from entering the territory. In retaliation, BGB men fired back, leaving the two Rohingyas dead. Some 190,000 yaba pills were found at the spot.”

BGB sources said the identities of the dead have not yet been determined. The bodies were sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy. A case will be filed in this regard, the BGB official said.

In another incident, two suspected sea robbers were killed in a “gunfight” with members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), in the Mognama area of Pekua upazila, around 5am. Eight firearms and 26 bullets were seized from the spot.

Company Major Mehedi Hasan of RAB-15 in the Cox's Bazar headquarters told the media: "Acting on information, our team conducted a drive in the area. Seeing us, the sea robbers fired on us and tried to escape. We fired back in self-defence. We found two bodies, arms, and ammunition at the spot. The bodies have been handed over to Pekua police station. We are trying to identify the suspects.”

In Dhaka, a man was killed in a "gunfight" with RAB, at West Matikata in the capital city, early yesterday. The dead was identified as Shafiqul, 30. Receiving information, a force raided a building in the area reached the spot, triggering a skirmish," he said.

Shafiqul, wounded in the gunfight, was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead, Shomsher said, adding that a Rab member was also injured.

Rab arrested Shafiqul's associates - Faurk and Pradeep - and recovered two pistols, bullets and a shotgun.

In Gazipur, a suspected mugger was killed in an alleged gunfight with police at Ershadnagar Bashpotti in Tongi early Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Kawsar Mia, son of Mintu Mia of the area. Police said Kawsar was accused in several criminal cases.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team conducted a drive to arrest Kawsar, said Arifur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police.

"He resisted arrest and opened fire, leading to a gunfight," Arifur said. "Kawsar sustained gunshot wounds during the skirmish and died while being taken to DMCH."

His cohorts managed to flee. Police said they recovered two firearms from the spot.
