Shinepukur leapfrog to 7th place

Sports Reporter, Dhaka

Unmukt Chand’s outstanding 90 powered Shinepukur Cricket Club as they swept past Brothers Union by thumping eight wickets (DLS method) in the rain-affected sixth-round fixture of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) Ground-3 in Savar yesterday.

With the triumph, Shinepukur leapfrogged Gopibagh-based team and placed seventh position on points-table. Actually they went up three positions from 10th to seventh position.

Shinepukur Cricket Club were set a target of 239 in 40 overs what they scored with ease when they had eight wickets in hand and 26 balls to spare.

To get a modest target, in-form opener Shadman Islam Onik and Sabbir Hosain launched their devastation on Brothers Union bowlers from the very beginning of their chase. Onik became aggressive more then Sabbir. They pulled together 61 for the opening wicket stand before the fall of Sabbir, struck four boundary and a six before he was caught behind for 27-ball 30.

Onik, who was in rhythm from the tour of New Zealand after being named for away Test series, partnered Unmukt Chand and added 75 for the second-wicket. Onik slashed nine boundaries and two sixes to make 77 off 69.

Shinepukur recruit Indian batsman in association with Towhid Hridoy sailed the team through with 26 balls remaining. He was unbeaten on 90. The right-handed batsman smashed nine boundaries and two sixes in his 83-ball 90 and was adjudged player of the match. Towhid Hridoy was not out 33 off 36, hitting two fours.

Brothers Union, earlier, scored 197 for five in the allotted 40 overs after being sent to bat first on BKSP’s batting track. Brothers, who are languishing at seventh place on points-table with four points from five matches, were on course a good start but Shuvagata Hom halted them when the spinning all-rounder removed opener Mizanur Rahman and one-down Fazle Mahmud Rabbi in the same over, while they were reeling at 50 for two.

Therefore, Brothers Indian recruit Indian Chirag Jani appeared at the crease to join hand with well-set Zunaid Siddique and attempted to break the knuckles of the Shinepukur’s bowling attack. Along with that, the duo tried to extend the total through building up big partnership.

He shared 76 for the third-wicket with Zunaid Siddique, who top-scored with 74 off 86 with five fours and a six and another 66 with Yasir Ali for the fourth-wicket stand.

Chirag Jani brought up his half century after Zunaid, the national discard of the Bangladesh. Jani smacked 54 off 76, clobbering four boundaries.

With the fall of Jani, they lost Sharifullah by Shoriful Islam, who grabbed two wickets along with Shuvagata Hom. Yasir tried to enlarge the total with fellow wicketkeeper-batsman Hamidul Islam but the rain made inroad again when they put on 197 on the board.
