All mango orchards are in full bloom here, signalling the possibility of a good production this year.
Farmers and sources in the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said the temperature was favourable for flowering from the beginning of the season. It is no wonder the mango trees are looking spectacular with a heavy bloom of flowers pointing to a good harvest this season.
According to the sources, more than 83 per cent of mango trees have borne flowers. Last year, the mango production was 250,000 metric tonnes. Those related with the mango business are expecting a business volume of more than of Tk. 2,000 crore this year in Chapainawabganj district.
Mango, the main cash crop of this district, offers huge business opportunities to different sets of people in different phases.
Orchard owners lease their orchards for one to five years to some businesspersons, who ensure good flowering. Another set of businesspersons then book the future crop at a higher price. The business chain, therefore, extends up to the marketing stage. Nor’westers, draughts, cloudy conditions, and hailstorm are the main enemies of mango, farmers say. When asked whether the inclement weather and fog after flowering this year affected the flowers, the deputy director of the Kallyanpur Horticuture Centre, Dr Saifur Rahman, said the flowers had not been damaged.
DAE sources said there were 2,474,710 mango trees in the district, standing on 31,820 hectares of land.
Some 250 varieties of mango are grown in the district. Of them, 40 per cent are Fazli, 30 per cent Ashina, 20 per cent Gopalbhog, Langra, Khirshapat and other good varieties. The rest are lower varieties of guti mangoes, the sources added.
