ADB photo-contest winners portray climate change threats

Eight images highlighting the dramatic effects of climate change in Asia and the Pacific, and actions that can be taken to counter the impacts, have won prizes in the Asian Development Bank's (ADB's) Click4Climate photograph contest, a press release stated yesterday.
“The winning photos from our region clearly show that none of us is immune to climate change-related impacts such as water scarcity, extreme weather conditions or desertification. The most vulnerable ones among us—the children and the poor—are often the worst-affected,” said Satinder Bindra, principal director of the ADB’s department of external relations.
“Therefore, at the same time, we need to be part of the solution,” he added.
Winners for the best photos are Somenath Mukhopadhyay from India in first place, with Dionisio Salvador and Robert Anton Aparente, both from the Philippines, taking second and third places, respectively. Additional special prizes were awarded to Thao Vu Xuan from Vietnam, and Arnold Jumpay from the Philippines.
The top three entries with the most number of Facebook likes were submitted by Sujan Adhikery and Suraj Adhikari of Nepal, along with Akber Rabby from Bangladesh. The contest was run through Instagram, and the winning images can be found on ADB's Facebook page:  http://buzz.mw/ba5it_l
Asia and the Pacific is one of the most vulnerable regions in the world to climate change, with many large populations living on exposed coastlines and dependent on agriculture, fisheries, and forestry—the sectors most exposed to risk.
The region experiences a high number of typhoons, floods, and other natural calamities. Between 2005 and 2014, climate-induced disasters killed nearly 225,000 people, while about USD 350 billion were lost in damage control.
Nations from around the world will gather in Paris, France, in December to agree on a global pact to tackle climate change and to ensure funds are made available for developing countries to cope with its impacts. The ADB has committed to doubling its climate financing to USD 6 billion per year to develop Asia by 2020.
ADB, based in Manila, is dedicated to reducing poverty in Asia and the Pacific through inclusive economic growth, environmentally sustainable growth, and regional integration.
