Mabia Akhtar Simanta earned the distinction of winning a gold and two silver medals in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship yesterday in Pune, India.
Simanta clinched a gold medal in the 63Kg category of women’s youth group. She lifted a total weight of 176Kg with 78 in snatch and 98 Kg in jerk. India bagged the silver, while the bronze went to Canada.
Later Simanta won a silver medal each in the junior and senior group of same weight category on the fourth day of the championship. According to the competition by-law, a lifter can participate in all three divisions in the same weight category.
Simanta after lifting the gold medal in her reaction said that she is very happy to earn the feat for the country. She requested all to pray for her to win more international laurel in future.
Simanta became the third female lifter of the country to win gold medal in international events. Earlier in the Molla Sabira and Shahrirar Sultana bagged a gold medal each in the South Asian Weightlifting Championship held in Nepal in 2012.
Meanwhile Mushtain won a silver medal in men’s youth division. He lifted a total weight of 205 Kg with 90 in snatch and 115 in jerk. Indian lifters won the gold and bronze medal in the event.
