MP Liton arrested

MP Liton arrested
Awami League MP from Gaibandha-1, Manjurul Islam Liton

Detective Police arrested Awami League MP from Gaibandha-1, Manjurul Islam Liton, from the house of one of his relatives in the city’s Uttara area yesterday night in connection with the shooting of a minor boy.
DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muntashirul Islam said, “A team of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police picked Manjurul up from Uttara area around 10pm.”
Manjurul was taken to the DMP Detective Branch office after his arrest from a relative’s house, he said. Later, he was being taken to Gaibandha to be produced before the local court in the morning.
The arrest came hours after the Supreme Court (SC) stayed a High Court order that directed the ruling party MP to surrender before a lower court by October 18 in a case for shooting the minor boy.
The government on Tuesday filed two petitions seeking stay on a HC order which asked Manjurul to surrender before the trial court by October 18 in two cases; one filed for shooting a minor boy and the other for looting and vandalism.
Responding to the petitions, chamber judge of the Appellate Division Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain stayed the HC order for a week in both cases.
After the SC verdict, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told reporters that law enforcers could arrest Manjurul without any delay following the chamber court order.
Whereas, Advocate Mokhsedul Islam, Manjurul’s counsel, told reporters that his client would surrender before a lower court very soon.
A HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Bismadeb Chakrabortty had on Monday rejected two bail petitions of Manjurul and directed him to surrender before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Gaibandha by October 18.
On October 2, Manjurul, also President of the Sundarganj Upazila Unit Awami League, shot Shahadat Hossain Sourav, son of Saju Mia of Gopalcharan village in Sundarganj, on the Bamandanga-Sundarganj road at around 6am.
Shahadat sustained two bullet injuries – one on the left leg and the other on the right leg – when Manjurul, allegedly drunk, opened fire. On October 3, Saju Mia filed a case with the Sundarganj Police Station against Manjurul. Since then, Manjurul is on the run. After the shooting incident, Manjurul’s family surrendered two of his firearms to the police. Authorities later cancelled permits for those firearms.
Manjurul is also accused of looting and vandalism in another case. One Hafizar Rahman, a resident of Shahabaz village under Sundarganj Upazila, filed a case against Manjurul and nine others on October 7.
Earlier, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that law enforcement agencies would take action against MP Manjurul.
“Nobody is above the law. We will take action against Liton as per the court’s instruction. We respect the judiciary and will enforce the court verdict on the matter,” Kamal told reporters after a meeting at the home ministry yesterday.
Kamal also told reporters that police made a significant progress in the killings of Italian citizen Cesare Tavella, Japanese citizen Kunio Hoshi and former chairman of Power Development Board Khijir Khan. The minister, however, refused to divulge the details of the murder cases. “We hope we’ll be able to share some good news with you soon in this regard,” he said.
“We’ve asked the law enforcement agencies to provide adequate security measures so that the festival can be celebrated peacefully,” he saoid.
