Chittagong Abahani Limited’s newly appointed coach Shafiqul Islam Manik is optimistic of playing in the last four of Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup football tournament. The eight teams tournament is scheduled to start on October 20 at MA Aziz Stadium under the auspices of Chittagong Abahani Limited.
The hosts with an aim to do a better result in the upcoming tournament have signed Shafiqul Islam Manik to guide the Port City team. Manik, a former national coach, started his new job on October 10 in Dhaka and now he takes his boys to Chittagong today to make the final preparation.
Shafiqul Islam Manik said yesterday that it was very tough to prepare a team perfectly within a short period but he will try heart and soul to give a good shape before beginning the campaign. He thinks Chittagong Abahani have been drawn in a death group with Dhaka Abahani Limited, East Bengal of Kolkata and Karachi Electric Football Club. “So we have to finish at least group runners-up to advance to knock-out phase. I’m confident that our team with the home ground advantage and support of the local crowd would fare better in the tournament.”
“I know it will be a tough competition for us to move up, so first of all our target will be to cross the group hurdle to make a room in the last four.” Manik said, “Actually I am yet to get the full squad as six of my players, who are drafted from other local clubs, would join the squad only after returning home from Kyrgyzstan.”  “I think after getting the full team we can make team plan and team combination. I hope it will not very difficult to do the job as most of the players are experienced playing for top teams in the country.” Manik, who did not get adequate time to train the team due to problem of grounds but he is very confident to get the team ready for the competition. “Despite a lot of lacking, we have to groom the team to take the challenges.”
