“At least 40pc patients are visiting surgery departments at hospital outdoors with urological complications”

At least 3 crore people in the country are suffering from any form of urinary complications. Of them 40 per cent of above 50 are affected by prostate related diseases, said experts at a discussion yesterday. Bangladesh Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) organised the discussion at a garments factory in the city on the occasion of the 99th birth anniversary of  father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Children's Day-2019.

Speaking at the awareness programme, they also said that “Women mainly suffer from recurrent urinary infection which can exist among female from birth to death”. Addressing the meeting, BAUS President Prof Abedin said among the diseases of urinary track, the stone in urinary track exist most which is at least 10 to 12 per cent while the ratio of prostate and kidney cancer is from 3 to 5 per cent.

He mentioned that country has only 270 urologists now which are quite a few against the huge number of urology patients. “At least 40 per cent patients are visiting the surgery department at outdoors of hospitals in the country with urological complications, the age group of them ranges from childhood to age-old male or female patients", Dr Abedin added.     An expert team of specialist urologists, nurses and technicians provided urological healthcare services among more than 400 workers of the Evince Garments, conducted necessary laboratory tests distributed required medicines for them totally free of charges.

As part of the day-long camp, BAUS organised the awareness raising session on prevention of urological diseases with Prof Dr Kazi Rafiqul Abedin, president of the BAUS in the chair.

Senior Consultant and Professor of department of Urology, Kidney Foundation Hospital, Prof Dr AJM Zamanul Islam Bhuiyan presented keynote paper in the meeting.

Prof Jamanul Islam Bhuiyan suggested getting early treatment, building healthy food habit, drinking sufficient water, consuming the right amount of vegetables, salt, meat to prevent urological complications. Director of Institute of Kidney Diseases and Urology Prof Dr Nurul Huda Lenin, Vice-President of BAUS Prof Dr Shafiqul Alam, Prof Dr Major (retd) Harun, chairman, department of Urology, Dhaka Medical College, Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman, professor of BSMMU, Dr Ishtiak Ahmed, chairman, Department of Urology of BSMMU, Prof Dr Khurshid Alam, were present, among others in the meeting.
