Independence Day

Independence Day

Today Bangladesh celebrates the 49th Independence and National Day. This year the celebration of the Independence Day coincides with the 24th founding anniversary of The Independent. So there are reasons for the staff  and the readers of the daily to feel elated. Bangladesh as part of Pakistan had to bear the brunt of suppression and subjugation in the hands of West Pakistani rulers since its creation in 1947. In fact, this war of liberation is the culmination of a long struggle for establishing the nation’s identity as a sovereign entity in the community of nations.

Independence is the most glorious and precious possession of our nation. On the fateful night of March 25, Pakistani military conducted a cowardly attack on the innocent sleeping people of Dhaka. They went on a spree of killing at different places in Dhaka. The Pakistan forces arrested Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from his Dhanmondi residence. He  managed to announced Independence of Bangladesh before being arrested that animated the freedom loving people to participate in the war. They built strong resistance against the Pakistan forces.  They formed a government in exile crowning Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as president, separated the country into several sectors and formed several forces including Mukti Bahini (freedom fighters), Guerilla Bahini and Mujib Bahini to conduct the Liberation War. Finally on December 16 of the year, the nation earned the victory with the sacrifices of three million lives and the supreme honour of thousands of women. There are a few nations in the world who made such sacrifices for their freedom.

On this day today we pay our deepest homage to Bangabandhu without whose leadership, sagacity and statesmanship and his comrades-in-arms our dream of freedom stood little chance of materialising. We also pay homage to those heroes who embraced martyrdom. Their sacrifices are too great to be sanctified further by any tribute. On this day it would also be pertinent to state that the country that has a proud legacy of struggle and sacrifice should have done better in terms of social justice, economic progress and cultural reawakening. However, it can be said that the country is now at peace with itself as the major collaborators of Pakistani military were tried and punished. Let the flag of our independence be carried for eternity.
