Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club trounced Gazi Group Cricketers by 43 runs in the sixth round game of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah yesterday and jumped to sixth position from ninth place.
Chasing the challenging of 278, Gazi Group Cricketers started fumbling to lose their openers Rony Talukdar and Imrul Kayes by on-song fast bowler Syed Khaled Ahmed. They slipped further from 2-33 to 5-47.
Shamsur Rahman Shuvo tried to rescue the team from the precarious situation through a couple of partnerships including 57 for the sixth-wicket with Touhid Tareq, who was out for 27 and another useful 89 with Mahedi Hasan for the seventh-wickets stand.
Shuvo, the national discard clouted 81 before being bowled by Gunaratne. He smashed two sixes and five fours in his 86-ball knock. After Shuvo, Mahedi tried to make a gritty resistance against Jamal’s bowler with the help of the fellow batsmen but wickets were tumbling at regular intervals to the other end.
He was the last batsman to fall for 60 that was not enough to avert the total and finally put on 234 on the board in 47 overs. Kamrul Islam Rabbi was on 19 not out. Pacers Khaled Ahmed and Salauddin Sakil shared six spoils between them. Asela Gunaratne backed them by a brace following his batting display that made him player of the match.
Earlier, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club managed to collect a challenging 277 for six in their stipulated 50 overs after being sent in to bat at Fatullah’s batting track largely Nurul Hasan Sohan’s unbeaten 81 and Asela Gunaratne’s 79.
To initiate the proceeding, Sheikh Jamal lost their opener Imtiaz Hossain cheaply. Fardeen Hasan then paired Tanvir Haider and tried to build up a big partnership through handling Gazi Cricketers’ bowlers. The duo hit 55 for the second-wicket but both Fardeen and Tanvir trudged back to the pavilion in the space of just eight runs. Opener Fardeen fell four runs short of his half-century before Tanvir’s caught behind for 19.
At this stage, captain Nurul Hasan Sohan came at the crease and guided the team to post a tricky total with the help of the fellow batsmen. The captain stitched together a string of useful partnerships including a useful 52 for the fourth-wicket with Nasir Hossain, who got out for 23 and an invaluable 121 with Asela Gunaratne for the fifth-wicket that crossed the 250-run mark.
Later he hit an unbeaten 19 with Enamul Haque for the seventh-wicket stand that gave the total some respectability. Sohan bashed a run-a-ball 81, studded with eight boundaries and a maximum to be left stranded with Enamul Haque scoring 10. Right-arm offbreak Parvez Rasool took three wickets for Gazi Group Cricketers.
Elsewhere at the BKSP Ground-3 in Savar, Mehedi Maruf’s scintillating hundred simplified Legends of Rupganj to humble Khelaghar Samaj Kallayan Samity by five wickets and placed them second on the points table.
They chalked up the identical 10 points with Abahani but they lagged behind the defending champions owning to better net run-rate.
Put in to bat, Khelaghar SKS garnered an inclusive 264 for three in 50 overs courtesy of half-centuries from Ashok Menaria (not out 87), Mahidul Islam Ankon (77) and Robiul Islam (53).
Ankon pulled together 131 with Menaria for the third-wicket stand that laid the foundation of the big total.
Both batsmen hit an equal number of seven boundaries and two sixes to make their respective scores of 77 off 99 balls and 87 off 879 balls respectively.
Sadikur Rahman (19) and Moinul Islam (13 not out) were the other contributors to set the challenging 265 for Legends, who in reply struck 118 through the opening stand of Mohammad Neem, who holed out for 77.
Thereafter, Mahedi Maruf made three partnerships that sent them at the close door of the victory. Maruf slammed his successive hundred. He earlier whopped 137 against Gazi Group Cricketers. This time he clattered eight fours and two sixes to make his 134-ball 108. Later he was named player of the match. Captain Naeem Islam slotted the team home with his unbeaten 28.
