Potato growers in Bhola are worried as they may have to incur losses due to sudden fall of prices.
On a visit to Ilisha Char Annada village in Bhola Sadar our correspondent found that potato has been cultivated on a huge area of land and farmers were busy with harvesting their crops.
Abdul Mannan, a grower said he cultivated potato on two acres of land. In spite of the fact that there has been a good production he expressed dissatisfaction due to fall of prices in the market. Each kilogramme of potato in the local market was going for Tk 7 in oppose to its spending cost Tk 8-9, he added.
Another farmer Abdul Baraque from the district said, “For the last five consecutive years I have been incurring loss from potato cultivation and now I have lost interest.”
Binoy Devnath, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Bhola, said due to continuous loss farmers of this region have lost their interest in potato cultivation.
A total of five thousand hectares of land has been used in potato cultivation this year which is lesser than previous year.
