7 of a ‘fraud gang’ held
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested seven alleged members of a fraud gang, including its two female members, from Kafrul area in the capital on Tuesday.
Identity of the arrestees could not be known immediately.
Rab headquarters sources said tipped-off about the presence of a fraud gang in the area, a team of the elite force conducted a drive and arrested the seven in the afternoon.
Details about the drive will be informed at a press briefing later.
Man’s body recovered
Police recovered the body of an unidentified young man from Subhadda Shashanghat area in South Keraniganj upazila yesterday morning.
Local people found the body of the young man, aged about 30, lying in the area at about 9:00 am and informed police. Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Mitford Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Officer-in-charge of South Keraniganj Police Station Manirul Islam confirmed the matter.
Bank donates blankets
First Security Islami Bank yesterday donated 110,000 blankets to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund for the cold-stricken people of the country.
Senior officials of the bank handed over the blankets to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office. Chairman of the bank Saiful Islam Masud, managing director Sayed Waseq Mohammad Ali and vice chairman Alhaj Abdul Malek were present. They also congratulated the Prime Minister on receiving the world’s highest environmental accolade - ‘The Champions of the Earth Award’ -- and ‘The ICT Sustainable Development Award’ of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Sheikh Hasina thanked the bank executives for coming forward in aid of the distressed humanity.
Allocation for Durga Puja
The government has allotted over 455.5 metric tons of rice (Government Relief or GR) for distribution among the 911 Puja Mandaps in nine upazilas of Khulna district and 31 wards of Khulna city on the occasion of Durga Puja, the highest religious festival of Hindu community.
Khulna District Relief and Disaster Management
Officials said over 56 metric tons of rice would be distributed among 112 puja mandaps under 31 wards of Khulna city. District Relief and Disaster Management Officer AKM Mannan said rice distribution will be started today and would be complete before Durga Puja, scheduled to be held on October 19.
Meanwhile, the Khulna City Corporation authorities would distribute Tk 4.30 lakh among 71 puja mandaps. Budget Officer MA Mushtak of KCC told BSS that they will distribute the money among the puja mandaps which will consist under KCC area.
Mayor of KCC Moniruzzaman Mony would handover the grants to the concerned Puja Udjapan Parisad committees by Sunday, he said.
Road crash kills one
A brick kiln worker was killed in a road accident at Rajendrapur on the Dhaka-Mawa highway here yesterday morning.
The deceased was identified as Muzahid, 20, son Abdus Salam, a resident of Puranghat area under Tahirpur Thana in Sunamganj district.
Sub inspector of South Keraniganj Thana Abul Hossain said the accident occurred when a bus hit Muzahid in the area at about 10 am as he was crossing the road. He died on the spot.
A case was filed in this connection.
