Participants in a divisional programme of right activists in the city yesterday called for enacting the Rights to Food Act immediately to ensure basic human rights.
They held a rally with road show and submitted memorandum containing the demand.
The participants also brought out a procession from Central Shaheed Minar in the city that ended at the deputy commissioner’s office where they submitted a memorandum to the government through the deputy commissioner.
Organised by Prantojon, the programme was participated by activists of Food Safety Network (Khaddo Nirapatta Network/ Khani). Executive director of Prantojon SM Shahjada presided over the programme that was addressed among others by chairman of Barisal Education Board Prof Ziaul Huq, Akkas Hossain, Dr Habibur Rahman, Dr Mizanur Rahman, Mahmudul Huq Khan Mamun, Zakir Talukdar, Shawkat Ali Badal, Lincoln Bayen, Md Shahbuddin, Ibrahim Hamid Masum. Speakers remembering promise of the prime minister at the South Asian Food Conference about ensuring food right to everyone called for enacting and implementing the food security act immediately.
Whilst under international law, the states are obliged to respect, protect and fulfill the right to food, the practical difficulties in achieving this human right are demonstrated by prevalent food insecurity across the world, and ongoing litigation in countries such as Bangladesh, a speaker observed.
The road show stared from Niilphamari on October 11 and will end at Dhaka on October 17 after covering 25 districts in four regions of the country to press home the demand for enacting and implementing the Right to Food Act, the organizers of the programme said.
