World-class specialised paediatric OT now in Dhaka
Bangladesh’s first international-standard specialised paediatric operation theatre (OT) at the national level has been launched at the National Institute of Ophthalmology & Hospital (NIO&H) on May 27, 2015 at Agargaon in Dhaka.
Director of NIO&H and Line Director of National Eye Care Prof Jalal Ahmed inaugurated the OT on Wednesday morning. Country Director of Orbis International Dr Munir Ahmed and Head of the Paediatric Ophthalmology Department at NIO&H Md Forhad Hossain were present as the special guests. Physicians, officials, teachers and students of NIO&H were also present.
NIO&H and Orbis, which is sponsoring the OT unit, believe it will be milestone in paediatric eye care in Bangladesh. They say children will be given world-class services at the unit for free.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Jalal Ahmed and Dr Munir Ahmed urged all concerned to work sincerely for ensuring the best utilisation of the operation unit.
Stressing the need for maintaining high quality in services, Prof Jalal said: “Installation of this highly expensive operation unit will be useless unless we can ensure the best services. We can advance only by offering the best services.”n
World Thyroid Day observes
Disorders of the thyroid gland can have a wide spread impact not only on the body’s metabolic function but also on the overall wellbeing of a person. To commemorate the World Thyroid Day on May 25th, a colourful rally and a scientific seminar was held in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
The seminar and rally was attended by Vice Chancellor of BSMMU, Prof. Dr Kamrul Hassan Khan, Pro- Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Md Shahidullah Sikder, Professor Md. Zulfiqur Rahman Khan, Treasurer of BSMMU and other dignitaries.
The scientific seminar was held at the National Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Applied Sciences and conducted by Prof. Dr Mohammed Farid Uddin Ahmed Head of Department of Endocrinology, BSMMU and Prof Mizanur Haque, Consultant of Atomic Energy Commission.
The consequences of decreased (hypothyroid) or excess thyroid (hyperthyroid) hormone levels in blood, it’s subsequent effects in pregnancy and childbirth, the various diagnostic modalities which are available for early diagnosis of thyroid disorders were among various topics which were discussed with clarity, thoroughness and charm.
Thyroid cancers were also focussed upon by the presenters. Most cancers of the thyroid gland, if diagnosed early are easily treatable and completely curable. Although treatment may include excision of the gland, but modern day synthetic analogues of the thyroid hormone are being used all over the world with excellent results. The emergence of nuclear research for the efficient diagnosis of various neck lumps was also demonstrated in the seminar. n
Scientific seminar on fistula held in Dhaka
A scientific seminar was held at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on the 23rd of May 2015 to commemorate the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula. The seminar was chaired by Vice Chancellor of BSMMU Prof. Dr Kamrul Hassan Khan who commented that doctors in the related field namely obstetricians, gynaecologists, urologists and anaesthesiologists must work together to treat patients of obstetric fistula.
According to the World Health Organization’s statistics as many as 2 million women have obstetric fistula and 1 hundred thousand women succumb to this curse every year. Obstetric Fistulas are a curse to any women whereby an abnormal communication or canal forms as a result of dissolution of protective tissues lying between the urinary bladder and vagina or between the rectum and vagina causing stools or urine to pass involuntarily from the vagina.
The need for better surgical training was also necessary for fistula repair. He also emphasized upon the need to increase awareness by part of NGO’s, so that patients may seek treatment for obstetric fistulas. Among other dignitaries who were present at the scientific seminar were, Professor Roushon Ara Begum Chairperson of Bangladesh Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society, Country Director of Engender Health Dr. Abu Jamil Faisel and Prof Saleha Begum Chowdhury Head of Department of Gynaecology BSMMU.
