Seizure of Indian Rs 68 lakh

Authorities still in dark; case not filed yet

STAFF REPORTER, Ctg

Chittagong Customs Authority and Civil Aviation Authority are still in the dark about how the Indian currency notes amounting to 68.07 lakh rupees seized at Shah Amanat International Airport on Tuesday had been smuggled into the country.
Even in 30 hours since the seizure, the authorities could not trace out any address or anyone involved in the smuggling of the Indian rupees.
The authorities concerned were yet to file any case over the incident as of filing this report at 7:00pm yesterday.
Moreover, the Civil Aviation Authority is shifting the responsibility onto the Chittagong Customs Authority to find out how the carton loaded with the Indian currency notes came in the Chittagong airport warehouse.
The customs sources said it is the responsibility of the Civil Aviation Authority to provide them with the addresses and names those who brought in the currency notes in their warehouse; on the other hand, the Civil Aviation Authority said it is the duty of customs to find out the smugglers.
Chittagong Customs Authority on Tuesday recovered a consignment of Indian currency notes worth 68, 06,500 lakh rupees stuffed inside a carton in the warehouse of Shah Amanat International Airport.
No token was found there indicating who brought in the carton and from which country it came in the airport warehouse.
Contacted, Wing Commander Mohammad Reazul Kabir,  manager of Shah Amanat International Airport, told The Independent, “We have handed over all the related documents to the customs officials. It is duty of the custom authorities to find out how the carton came into the country or who have brought it.”
When asked about the identity of the people who brought the rupees in Chittagong, he replied only saying, “It will not be ri0ght to publish the names in newspaper.”
“The Civil Aviation Authority might know how the carton came here; it is not our duty,” he added.
“The Civil Aviation Authority has not given us any clue or any documents regarding the issue,” said Abul Kashem, assistant commissioner of airport customs.
When contacted, Mohammad Alamgir, officer-in-charge of Patenga police station, said till filing the report no authorities went to the police station to file case over the incident.
