The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) plans to launch an agitation if the government increases gas prices, according to party leaders. Alongside the party’s current movement to free its ailing chairperson Khaleda Zia, BNP leaders are contemplating to launch a movement if gas prices are hiked, said the leaders.
Talking to The Independent, they said following the farcical election on December 30 last year, the party rank and file wanted to carry out a mass-contact programme and start an issue-based movement to strengthen the movement to release Khaleda Zia and provide her proper treatment.
Preferring anonymity, a leader said the party planned to launch an issue-based movement in protest against a hike in gas prices, which would hit the middle and lower-income groups hard.
“The BNP high command has already given the go-ahead to the party leadership to protest against any anti-people move by the government. The party, however, is waiting for the government’s decision in this regard,” he added.
