HC seeks report by May 5 on steps taken so far

The High Court yesterday directed the government to submit a report before it by May 5 on what steps it has taken to ensure the safe food including fish and meat for the citizen. The HC bench also issued a rule asking the government to explain why it should not be directed to ensure the supply of safe foods for the people and why its failure in providing safe foods for the people should not be declared illegal.

The HC bench comprising Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif and Justice Rajik Al Jalil came up with the order and rule following a supplementary petition filed by Advocate Shammi Akhtar seeking its directive in this regard. Advocate Shammi filed the supplementary petition along with a writ petition which was filed on May 27 last year to ensure the quality of water pot supplied by Dhaka Water Supply and

Sewerage Authority and others in the country.

Advocate ZR Khan Rabin appeared for the petitioner while deputy attorney general Mokhlesur Rahman represented the state. A total of 12 officials including secretaries of food and health, director general of BSTI and inspector general of police (IGP) have been made respondents in the petition.

Earlier, the HC bench asked safe food authority to submit report by March 5 on what steps it has been taken to ensure providing safe foods for the people. But, the safe food authority did not submit any report in line with the HC order, Advocate ZR Khan Rabin said. After hearing on the supplementary petition, the HC bench came up with the aforesaid order, Khan added.
