Martyr Shawakat Ali nominated for Independence Award

The government has decided to honour another personality with this year's Independence Award alongside previously announced 12 personalities and an organisation in recognition of their glorious and remarkable contributions to national level. The martyred is Barrister Shawakat Ali Khan, said an official handout released yesterday.

Earlier on Sunday, the government announced the names of 12 personalities and one organisation for this award. The other recipients of the country's highest state honour in Liberation War and Independence category are martyred intellectual Mufazzal Haider Chaudhury and martyr ATM Zafar Alam, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque and former Housing and Public Works Minister Mosharraf Hossain, Dr Kazi Misbahun Nahar, late Prof Abdul Khaleque, late Prof Mohammad Khaled.

Brigadier General Dr Nurunnahar Fatema Begum will receive the award in Medical Science, while Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad in Social Service, Murtaja Bashir in Culture, Hasan Azizul Haque in Literature, Prof Dr Hasina Khan in Research and Training.

The Bangladesh Atomic Research Institute will receive an award in Science and Technology category. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hand over the awards at a function at Bangabandhu International Conference Center in the city on March 25.
